Cleaning your refrigerator will eliminate any festering problems that may be causing odors. Unplug the appliance and let it preheat before cleaning it. Refrigerators that are not cold are also easier to clean.

Clean the refrigerator drawers

Take the drawers, bins and shelves out of the refrigerator and wash them in hot soapy water in the sink or tub, then set them aside to dry.

Washing the interior

Clean the inside and any non-removable shelves with an all-purpose cleaner and paper towels. If you prefer something more natural to clean the inside of your appliances, fill a spray bottle with a cleaning solution of two tablespoons of baking soda and hot water. Or, add equal parts white vinegar and water to the spray bottle and wipe the surface with a sponge or microfiber cloth.

Clean the back and sides

Move the refrigerator away from the wall and clean the back, top and sides. You may find a lot of accumulated dust that you can clean with a vacuum cleaner. Dust and dirt also collect on the door handles and plastic seals. To clean the plastic seals, use a toothbrush with a mild all-purpose cleaner or DIY mix (baking soda or vinegar and water) and wipe with a dry cloth.
